Jesus Continues to Heal
Matt Destry – Communications Pastor
“Aeneas,” Peter said to him, “Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and take care of your mat.” Immediately Aeneas got up. All those who lived in Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord.
We now find ourselves well into the life of the early church. Luke’s statement of purpose from Acts 1 continues to ring true: “all that Jesus began to do and teach”. We find here in Acts 9 that Jesus is still at work, teaching and healing, through the Spirit-empowered lives of His disciples. This time, God uses the healing of a man, Aeneas, as a witness to the towns of Lydda and Sharon, to bring about the obedience of faith.
Have you ever set out to serve someone or bless them in some way, and then realised that it had been about you and not about them? We can at times seem to do good things, but deep down, they were for our glory and not out of love for the other. Still other times, we can work for God but fail to rely on His Spirit – as though we had what was needed to bring about a change in someone else. This passage shows us what happens when the right spirit meets the right motivation: healing and witness.
Peter is clear here that it is not he who does the healing. It is Jesus Christ. Peter, after what has now been years since Pentecost, is still aware that it is Jesus doing the healing. He is also adamant that he will not receive glory for this task, but that it will be for the glory of God. As a result, the reach is widespread and deep – and many people turn to the Lord.
When God heals, he does it for His glory. He does not heal that we would look spiritual or important. He does it that His name would be praised. Our job is to obey and follow His lead – if we do this, we will continue to witness Jesus stretching out his hand to heal, and many miraculous signs and wonders will accompany that, resulting in worship and honour to Jesus, the one who does healing.
1/ Have you ever witness someone be healed physically? What happened?
2/ What was the result for the person who was healed? What about the people witnessing the miracle?
3/ How can you be mindful to always give God the glory in your life?
